This course will help you to be able to handle all aspect of procurement in your organisation. Every organisation needs inputs of goods and services from external providers or suppliers. This course will examine the developing role of the purchasing and supply (procurement) function in managing these inputs, and point out some of the ways in which the activity can contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the organisation, demonstrating how organisations are developing their procurement contribution. The course will also identify ways of measuring the stage of development achieved by an organisation and establish how the development stage accomplish can affect performance of the purchasing activity.

Programme Details

Traditionally, the objectives of procurement have been simple and straight-forward: to acquire the right quality of material, at the right time, in the right quantity, from the right source, at the right price. This statement is criticised by some experts as being rather superficial and simplistic. Certainly, this is a reasonable observation, although the exposition does provide a practical starting point for discussion to take place.

Course Specification

This course will examine a much broader statement of objectives of procurement as suggested nowadays. For instance, organisations need access to competitive and productive supply markets if they are to be in business at all. The trend is from tactical to strategic procurement, establishing collaborative relationships with external resources and securing major business advantage from procurement. Several executives are now looking to procurement to engage in strategic conversations about how supply chains can be improved to deliver the greatest long-term returns.

Why sustainable procurement? Procurement is seen by many of today’s successful organisations as an activity of considerable strategic importance. The fact that the strategic role and contribution of purchasing and supply is well recognised in many leading commercial concerns has meant that the strategic purchasing decisions may be taken by purchasing involvement at board level, rather than by a departmental manager.
